Don't Let A Bad Yard Scare You Off

by Angel Kennedy

If you are looking for the right home for your family, make sure you try to buy a home with a yard you can see yourself getting full enjoyment out of. This can be especially important if you are someone who really loves the outdoors, or if you have children who will be spending plenty of time out in that yard. Once you close escrow on your new home, here are some of the changes you may want to make to your yard to create the perfect space for all of you:

Get rid of bothersome trees: The first thing you want to do is just get rid of the bothersome trees that are going to be more of a hindrance than anything. Some trees will be great sources of shade, while others will help to add a nice bit of privacy to your yard.

However, other trees can simply be a problem. They may be growing too close to the power lines or they may be leaning over the roof. Also, you may have some diseased trees that are only going to cause problems down the road when they die or the disease spreads to your other trees.

Another example of a tree that should be removed is one with large roots that are too close to your swimming pool. If it continues to grow it can really damage your pool.

Take care of the yard: If your new home has an automatic sprinkler system pay attention to how much water the grass is getting. If you see signs of mushrooms, moss or you notice the grass is wet longer than you would expect, then you want to adjust the sprinklers so they don't run as long as they are currently set to.

Make sure you cut the lawn regularly. If you haven't had a home with a lawn before, then you may need to rent a lawn mower until you find a model you want to purchase. Pull weeds often or they can quickly take over the yard and make it look horrible.

Create a garden area: If you are a gardener, or you would like to become one, then you want to create the perfect garden area in your new yard. Choose a spot that's going to give your garden plenty of sunshine, but also the right amount of shade during the heat of the day.

Once you have the garden set up you can protect what you are growing by spraying it down with pepper spray you have made by crushing hot peppers, mixing them with water and putting the solution in a spray bottle. Just don't forget to wash the spray off good before you eat something out of the garden. You may also want to install a fence around your garden.

About Me

Learning The Gardening Basics

Once I bought my first home, I realized I wanted to dedicate a portion of the yard for a garden. I wanted to grow some fruits and veggies that I could use inside for cooking, but I wasn't sure how to get started. Fortunately, a neighbor of mine heard about my project and suggested a great continuing education class about beginning gardening. When I started going, I was overwhelmed, but I quickly realized that the information was valuable and interesting.
