Adding The Appearance Of Space To A Tiny Yard With Landscaping Tricks

by Angel Kennedy

If your home is located on a small parcel, you most likely wish to have your land look a bit more expansive. There are several landscaping tricks that can help make a small yard appear larger. Here are some simple ways you can use to give the illusion of more land in your yard.

Try A Curved Walkway

When a straight sidewalk leads from the street toward your home, the eyes are naturally drawn to the front of the house quickly, making the viewer pay attention to less of the surroundings leading up to the porch area. Consider ripping out a straight walkway and place a curved one down instead. The eyes will then be drawn to each side of the front lawn area as the path will gain attention due to its intriguing shape. Use cobblestone, pavers, or a festive colored slate to draw more attention downward.

Add A Few Levels

A flat lawn will be glazed over by the eyes very quickly. Adding a few height levels to the existing land can make it feel larger as the eyes will be drawn into many different directions to see features offered. Add a retaining wall to draw eyes upward. This can be made from a decorative stone to add some appeal. Place a flower bed in one area of the yard to break up the monotony of a flat grassy surface. Draw the eyes upward a bit by planting different sized shrubs or trees within the yard.

Designate Specific Areas

Section off your yard into a few different activity areas. Designate one area as the seating area complete with a small table and chair for relaxation. Make another area purely for outdoor games by placing horseshoes, a croquet set, or a small net for badminton. Have another area reserved for a small garden, bird watching area with bird bath and feeder, or storage area with small shed and gardening cart. Breaking apart the yard into predetermined sections will make it feel bigger as there will appear to be much to do when out in the yard.

Avoid Setting Boundaries

If your yard is extremely small, lose any fencing you may have around it. This will just make it appear smaller, especially if the fencing is a solid structure without a view to the other side. Do not use flowers or shrubs along the perimeter of your yard as this will make the interior portion feel contained and less expansive. Having an open air concept in your yard will make the area feel larger. Use some eye-catching pieces in the middle portion of your yard to draw attention to the center rather than the edges. Place a fountain, a small garden statue, or whimsical garden signs around a flower arrangement strategically in the center of your land to gain attention away from the edges of your property.
